His fifty in the first innings was lively, yet important. Poor choice in the second innings.

Returned from injury with a five-for, but looked out of touch when batting. Struggled while fielding in the face of Head's assault.

Jamie Smith – 4

Might possess the game for Australia, yet must to smarten up. Will likely face a lot of short bowling from now on.

Gus Atkinson – Five

Part of the impressive English first-innings bowling effort and tried to carry the fight while batting in the second innings. Part of the bowlers that fell apart on Saturday evening.

Debutant had tough luck to be exposed against Archer in the first innings, later contributed in the sensational pursuit of runs.

Usman Khawaja – 3

An unusual match. Did not look fully fit and spent time off the field. Took several key catches in the slips, but also seemed immobile in the field. Earns a point due to his injury which enabled Head to bat as opener.

Marnus Labuschagne – Seven

A successful comeback to the team. Absorbed the English bowling pressure more effectively than most in the first innings, and supported Head in the second.

Smith – 5

Looked out of sorts in the first innings. Unnecessary before the game comments about Panesar.

Travis Head – 9

Possibly unfair not to get a perfect score, however he played a pretty poor shot in the first innings. His follow-on century was an historic innings.

Cameron Green – 5

Took the crucial dismissal of Ollie Pope early. Rattled by one Mark Wood short ball during his innings. Barely required later in the match.

Alex Carey – Five

Attempted an aggressive response versus the English attack on the first evening. Tidy behind the stumps.

Mitchell Starc – 9

Shouldered the burden of the bowling in the absence of Cummins and Josh Hazlewood achieving the first Aussie Ashes series 10-wicket haul in 20 years.

Scott Boland – Six

Short of top form in the first innings. Got better later to spark the England batting collapse.

Solid debut. Quite able replacement for Cummins and Hazlewood.
