Democratic House Candidate Indicted For Windy City ICE Demonstrations
The progressive congressional candidate, an left-leaning candidate for Congress, has been indicted over allegations stemming from involvement in protests near a federal immigration center in the vicinity of the Chicago area in September.
Details of the Indictment
The indictment, submitted recently, claim this twenty-six-year-old Palestinian American political figure along with five others “physically hindered and impeded” an officer who was “compelled to proceed very slowly” to avoid injuring any of the conspirators.
Abughazaleh, who is running for a congressional seat in Illinois, was charged with plotting to obstruct a federal officer and hindering the agent while they were performing official duties.
Alleged Actions During Protest
As stated in court papers, the group “planned together with others” to prevent by force, intimidation, and threat, Agent A, from performing official tasks.
Prosecutors claim that Abughazaleh, along with the other individuals, “struck forcefully” on the officer’s car, “gathered closely around the front and side” of the car and also “pressed on the car to block its progress”.
The charging documents state that the group etched the word “pig” on to the vehicle and damaged a side mirror and rear wiper.
It also alleged that Abughazaleh specifically “joined the crowd at the front of the government vehicle”, and with her hands on the hood braced her body and hands against the vehicle while staying directly in the car’s way, obstructing and blocking the agent.
Response from the Candidate
After the charges were filed, Abughazaleh, recognized for her substantial online following, labeled the charges “a politically motivated case”.
“This is a … gross attempt at silencing dissent, a right protected under the first amendment. This case is yet another attempt by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish those who dare to speak up. That’s why I’m going to fight these unjust charges,” she said.
She continued: “As I and others exercised our first amendment rights, ICE has hit, dragged, thrown, shot with pepper balls, and teargassed hundreds of protesters, myself included. Simply because we had the gall to say masked men abducting our neighbors and terrorizing our community cannot be the new normal.
“This case targets our rights to protest, speak freely, and associate with anyone who disagrees with this government … Throughout my career, I have resisted the nation’s regression toward authoritarianism, and I will not stop now,” she added.

The indictment comes as the Trump administration ramps up federal immigration raids across numerous progressive cities including Chicago – an action that has drawn strong condemnation from regional and state officials.
These operations have faced broad resistance from citizens, Democratic members of Congress, and advocacy organizations, including the ACLU characterizing them as an expansion of a national paramilitary force intended to strengthen executive authority.
