Gamers Are Receiving a New Game in the Best Star Wars Series Ever Made, Directed by a Mass Effect Trilogy Dev.
The galaxy far, far away fans are spoiled for options when it comes to great video games showcasing lightsabers, but the galaxy imagined by George Lucas is not just a arena for fighting. Not many franchises have grasped this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the old-school computer role-playing game style that made studios like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after multiple starts and stops, The Game Awards has announced that fans will soon be able to experience a spiritual follow-up to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
The Exciting Unveiling
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is described as "a fresh single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, formerly of BioWare and the creative lead of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we crafted the original KOTOR, we wanted to build a quintessential Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that was made of all the things we hoped to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we began developing that game, our aspirations are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an possibility to investigate a modern vision of a quintessential Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an all-new story tailored specifically to deliver on the blend of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the center of KOTOR.”
A Surprising Development
The announcement is something of a unexpected development, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, reports had suggested that a remake of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development through March 2025.
Here is the official description for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in conjunction with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
The Legacy of KOTOR
The classic role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are famous for their conversation-rich, decision-based, and stat-imbued approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they accidentally defined how people picture the Old Republic era as a whole, still today. The games dared to question many tenets of Jedi lore that are often treated as unquestionable, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are correct. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a considerably bleaker direction by posing the question if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are venerated by fans years after their release, but the follow-up in particular is viewed by many as one of the best pieces of Star Wars media in existence.
The Future is Bright
And now, a few years after receiving a vibe-heavy trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the comparable style. Given the appetite for complex games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's executed properly has the chance to be incredibly popular.
