Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side struck two times late to take a surprise advantage. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing shootout victory.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
